Today, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in the Palestinian Gaza Strip "ends an era of terror."
Trudeau described Sinwar as a "brutal leader" of a group that Canada considers a "terrorist" organization.
"Under Sinwar's leadership, Hamas committed atrocities on October 7 and sought to destroy Israel, launching devastating and senseless terrorist attacks on civilians throughout the region," Trudeau added. "Today's events provide a certain amount of justice for his victims and their families," Trudeau noted.
Trudeau also reiterated Canada's call for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly also commented on the killing of the Palestinian Islamist leader, stating in a statement posted on the "X" platform that "Sinwar's legacy of terror must be unequivocally condemned on a global scale."
Joly said that "Hamas must immediately release the hostages (Israelis) and lay down their arms and not participate in any way in the future governance of the Gaza Strip."
"A ceasefire must be ensured," the Canadian Foreign Minister added.
The Israeli army confirmed today the killing of Sinwar, who is considered the main mastermind behind Hamas's attack on southern Israel from the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023, which ignited the ongoing war since then.
The Israeli army stated that Sinwar was killed yesterday in the Tel Sultan neighborhood in Rafah in southern Gaza, in a place the army was besieging without knowing Sinwar was present there. The Israeli army radio reported that the Palestinian leader was killed after an engagement with Israeli soldiers and that he was wearing a military harness.
Sinwar was the head of Hamas's political bureau in the Gaza Strip when the movement's fighters and other Palestinian militants launched the October 7 attack on southern Israel, and he became the head of the political bureau of the movement after the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, who held this position, in Tehran on July 31 of last year.
