Canada is facing a growing crisis regarding the hosting of refugees and irregular migrants, as they occupy nearly 4,000 hotel rooms across the country.

This temporary solution funded by Canadian taxpayers has cost $1.76 billion since 2017.

According to a briefing note from the Ministry of Immigration dated June 13, as of May 30, the ministry's hotel footprint consisted of approximately 3,810 rooms in 29 hotels, accommodating about 6,900 asylum seekers in British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador.

Most of these hotels are located in Ontario cities, including Kingston, Cornwall, Ottawa, and Windsor, and the total cost of housing these newcomers has been $1.76 billion since 2017.

This figure includes $960 million in grants paid to municipalities through the temporary housing assistance program and $765 million paid directly to hotel owners.

A survey conducted on May 3 revealed that the daily cost for room and meals is $224, with the average meal cost being $84 per day.

In addition to accommodation, asylum seekers receive free meals and medical care, raising concerns among taxpayers.
