Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow continued her visit to the Irish capital, Dublin, today for the second consecutive day, as part of a business mission to Ireland and the United Kingdom aimed at promoting the city of Toronto to investors and the global film industry.
During her visit, Chow meets with business owners and representatives from film studios and television stations in Ireland, accompanied by a delegation from the film sector in Toronto.
This tour, which started yesterday, comes at a time when international trade relations are experiencing increased tension due to the trade war initiated by U.S. President Donald Trump against Canada and several other countries.
The Mayor of Toronto stated in a press release, "During this time of historical uncertainty, it's never been more important to have reliable trading partners than it is today."
During the tour, Chow will meet her counterpart in Dublin, Ray McAdam, and her counterpart in London, Sadiq Khan, along with other officials in Ireland and the United Kingdom, with the visit expected to last until Saturday.
These movements come in light of the Trump administration's announcement of its intention to move forward with widespread tariffs on imports from countries that do not reach trade agreements with the United States by August 1st.
Earlier in April, the U.S. President announced a plan to impose these tariffs but temporarily suspended their implementation to allow for negotiations. So far, Washington has only concluded trade agreements with the United Kingdom and Vietnam.
In a statement made yesterday, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Piesen confirmed that countries that do not reach an agreement with Washington in the coming days will face tariffs that could reach up to 50% starting in early August.
The Trump administration had initially set July 9th as a deadline for the imposition of punitive tariffs, before Trump announced last Friday, without providing details, a deferral of the actual implementation until the beginning of next month.
