The largest study of the catastrophic wildfire season in Canada in 2023 concluded that it is "inevitable" that the standard burning was caused by extreme heat and severe drought, while the addition of a small amount of consumed forests may make recovery more difficult.
It warned that the extreme temperatures observed that year were already equivalent to some climate forecasts for 2050.
The study published yesterday, Tuesday, in the journal Nature Communications stated: "It is inevitable that the severe deficit in heat and humidity facilitated a record wildfire season in 2023."
This season led to the burning of 150,000 square kilometers – seven times the historical average – forcing 232,000 Canadians to leave their homes and requiring assistance from 5,500 firefighters from around the world, as well as national resources and the military. The smoke drifted as far as Western Europe.
