Christia Freeland, the Deputy Prime Minister, stated that the international student program, as well as the temporary foreign workers program in Canada, have witnessed several abuses.
Freeland's remarks came just days after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that the federal government is taking steps to reduce the number of low-wage temporary foreign workers in Canada.
The federal government had announced earlier this year the necessity to set a cap on the number of international students coming to Canada.
Freeland added that we view international students and foreign workers as new Canadians who have a lot to offer and contribute, which is something great that Canada is witnessing, and yet there are abuses.
On another note, Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre answered questions from reporters at a press conference about how he would handle immigration if elected, stating, “We need to control the increasing population growth in order to provide better health services and also ensure suitable housing.”
It is worth mentioning that the Canadian government decided to reject applications from low-wage temporary foreign workers in areas where the unemployment rate is 6% or higher, effective September 26.
As for employers, there will be a cap of 10% for low-wage employees coming from the temporary foreign workers program (TFW), and the maximum duration of the employment period will be reduced to one year instead of two, according to what the Canadian Ministry of Employment and Social Development has stated.
