An operation conducted by the Spanish navy sent a plane and a ship to search for a fishing boat from Senegal with about 200 migrants on board who have been missing for about two weeks, but the mission found today, Monday, what appears to be a different migrant boat.

The reconnaissance plane spotted a boat 71 miles (114 kilometers) south of Gran Canaria Island, which the Spanish rescue service initially thought might be the missing boat.

But a spokesperson for the service later said that the rescue ship found 86 people on board and that the point of departure will only be revealed after further investigations. The boat was towed to Gran Canaria Island.

The organization (Woking Borders) for migrant relief said yesterday, Sunday, that the fishing boat carrying 200 migrants and two other boats, one carrying about 65 people and the other carrying between 50 and 60 people, have been missing for about two weeks after leaving Senegal in an attempt to reach Spain.

Helena Maleno from the organization also said today, Monday, that the families of at least 300 migrants who were on the three boats have not received any new information about their whereabouts.

The (Woking Borders) organization contacted authorities in Senegal, Mauritania, Morocco, and Spain, urging them to search for the missing boats.

Maleno said, "More resources are needed for the search."

The three boats also sailed in late June from the village of Caffontaine in the Casamance region of Senegal, which has witnessed a decades-long rebellion and is located 1700 kilometers from the Spanish Canary Islands. Maleno said the weather conditions in the Atlantic Ocean were poor for such a journey.

Migrants from the Sub-Saharan Africa region usually take the migration route through the Atlantic Ocean.

The International Organization for Migration, affiliated with the United Nations, also reported that at least 559 people died last year while attempting to reach the Canary Islands.

Data from the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) show that 1,135 migrants from Senegal have arrived in the Canary Islands since the beginning of this year.
