Camila Cardoso reappeared for Dawn Staley and South Carolina.

Cardoso scored 15 points and grabbed 17 rebounds, and South Carolina completed its perfect season with an 87-75 victory over Clark and Hawkeyes in the NCAA championship game in Cleveland yesterday  Sunday.

With Staley directing relentless offense from the sidelines, the Gamecocks (38-0) became the tenth Division team to pass a season undefeated.  They achieved this feat after losing all five starters from last season's team that lost to Clark in the national semifinal.

Staley said, “When the kids lock down on themselves and have belief, and they have confidence, and their parents have the same confidence, this is what can happen. They made history. They made history.”  They have etched their names in the history books."

Clark did everything she could to lead the Hawkeyes to their first championship.  She scored 30 points including 18 record points in the first quarter.  She rewrote the record book in Iowa (34-5), and earned the title of the professional top scorer in Division One NCAA history with 3951 points.

She said she hopes her legacy will not be defined by failure in two NCAA championship games, but more by the millions of new fans she helped bring to the game and countless young girls and boys she inspired.

Clark said, “I think the most important thing is that these things are really hard to win, and I think I know more than most people now that coming close twice really hurts.”
