The police said that a security guard working at the Drake Bridle Path mansion in Toronto was seriously injured in a shooting outside the home early Tuesday morning.
Police tape and patrol cars can be seen at the sprawling home of the rapper near Park Lane Circle and Post Road, and emergency crews were called to the area around 2:09 a.m. to report of a shooting.
The police said that the victim, an adult male, was seriously injured in the shooting and was taken to the hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
The police could not determine whether Drake was home at the time of the shooting.
Inspector Paul Krowsick told reporters at the scene that the suspect or suspects involved in the shooting fled the scene in a vehicle that police have not released a description of. He added that investigators are currently reviewing video footage of the incident.
Krowsick said that police are in contact with Drake's team and that they are cooperating with the investigation.
The shooting comes amid a rising tension in rap music with Los Angeles rapper Kendrick Lamar. Drake and Lamar released a number of tracks aimed at each other over the weekend, which included unfounded claims and personal insults.
When asked about a possible connection between the shooting and the recent war of words, Krowsick said it is too early to know if there is a link.
He added, "The investigation is still very early, and we do not have a motive at this time."
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow was asked about the shooting at an unrelated news conference Tuesday morning, and she said that "any shooting" in the city is unwelcome.
She added, "I hope the police find the individuals who are violating the law and apprehend them."
Krowsick said there will be an increased police presence in the area as the investigation begins, but no more than at any other time a firearm is discharged in the city.
