The NBA suspended Jontay Porter from games for life after completing an investigation into gambling allegations against the former Toronto Raptors player.
The league's investigation found that Porter violated league rules by disclosing confidential information to sports bettors, limiting his participation in one or more games for betting purposes, and betting on NBA games.
The three are prohibited under the NBA's collective bargaining agreement.
Porter averaged 4.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.3 assists in 13.8 minutes over 26 games with Toronto this season.
He also played with the G-League's Raptors 905, but was seeing more playing time with Toronto in March after starting center Jakob Poeltl suffered a hand injury late in the season.
The NBA investigation found that before the Raptors' game against the Sacramento Kings on March 20, Porter disclosed confidential information about his health status to a person he knew was a bettor.
Another person connected to Porter, who he knew was a bettor in the NBA, placed a bet of $80,000 with an online sportsbook to win $1.1 million, betting that Porter would perform poorly in the 123-89 loss to Sacramento.
The prop bet, which is short for "proposition bet," is a wager not tied to the final result or outcome of the game and is often related to a facet of individual player performance.
The league's investigation also found that Porter limited his participation in the game to affect the outcome of one or more bets on his performance in at least one Raptors game. In the March 20 game, Porter played only three minutes, claiming he was feeling unwell. Due to the unusual betting activity and the player's actions, the $80,000 prop bet was frozen and not paid out.
Additionally, from January to March 2024, while traveling with the Raptors, Porter placed at least 13 bets on NBA games using the online betting account of one of his associates. The size of these bets ranged from $15 to $22,000, totaling $54,094. The total returns from these bets were $76,059, resulting in a net profit of $21,965.
None of the bets involved any game that Porter played in. Three of the bets were parlay bets that included one of the Raptors games, where Porter bet that the Raptors would lose, and all three of the parlays lost.
The NBA was alerted to the suspicious bets by licensed sports betting operators and an organization monitoring legal betting markets.
The investigation into Porter's conduct was revealed around the same time news broke about an alleged gambling scandal involving Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani's interpreter.
