As the Israeli army controls the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt, Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly warned that the attack could have grave consequences in an already "catastrophic" situation.
Joly said today, Tuesday: "The invasion of Rafah, which would put the lives of women, children, and innocent civilians at risk, is absolutely unacceptable."
She added, "A ceasefire must happen now, we need to ensure the release of the hostages, and we need to ensure that humanitarian aid reaches Gaza. Violence must stop, and Hamas must lay down its arms."
Joly confirmed that the situation in Gaza is catastrophic.
She had announced that Hamas agreed yesterday, Monday, to an Egyptian-Qatari proposal for a ceasefire, but Israel stated that the conditions do not meet its demands.
Joly continued: "We have been following the negotiations, which are very smooth, and we have been in contact with many officials on the Israeli side, on the Qatari side, and on the Egyptian side, and we hope that the negotiations will be fruitful."
Canadian Minister of International Development Ahmed Hussen confirmed that the Israeli attack on Rafah will only lead to more misery.
He explained that there are more than 1.5 million people with nowhere else to go, they are trapped there, and humanitarian aid cannot reach them, which will lead to many casualties among civilians.
Hussen said that the Canadian government advised against carrying out this operation and that it feels "great disappointment" over the recent developments.
