The Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced an increase in the seizure of illegal items and a rise in attempts by unauthorized foreign nationals to enter Canada from the United States this year compared to last year.

Key statistics for 2024 (as of the end of October):

• Weapons: 15,500 firearms and 850 guns were seized, an increase of 50 compared to last year.

• Drugs:

• 25,600 kg of illegal drugs.

• 4.9 kg of fentanyl (an increase of 775%).

• 3,955 kg of cocaine (an increase of 168%).

• 37 kg of heroin.

• 21,457 kg of narcotics and other precursor chemicals.

• 237 kg of other opioids (including opium, methadone, and morphine).

• 5,000 kg of cannabis.

• Unauthorized tobacco: 547,000 kg.

• Stolen vehicles: 2,070 vehicles intercepted before being smuggled out, an increase of 500 vehicles compared to last year.

Increase in the number of unauthorized foreigners:

• Nearly 34,000 people were prevented from entering Canada through the land border with the United States, a 30% increase from last year.

• More than 14,000 foreigners were removed from Canada for violating the Refugee Protection and Immigration Act.

Additional efforts to enhance security:

• More than 500 new recruits and 18 new detection dog teams joined the CBSA workforce by the end of the year.

Public Safety Minister, Dominic LeBlanc, praised the agency's efforts, stating:

“The Border Services Agency has played a pivotal role in combating criminal activity and protecting the health and safety of our communities.”

Analysis:

These increases in seizures and operations are a direct result of the agency's enhanced capabilities and increased staff numbers, reflecting Canada's commitment to maintaining the security of its shared border with the United States.
