Report: Saudi Nuclear vs. Normalization with Israel

Israel has expressed concern over the obstacles placed by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia before Washington in order to normalize relations with Tel Aviv. Riyadh's demands included two basic conditions: advanced weapons and the green light to start a civilian nuclear program.

A senior Israeli official explained, after several weeks of headlines about normalization talks between Israel and Saudi Arabia, "that these talks are still far from achieving their goals, and that there are many issues overshadowing the chances of a breakthrough, including the Saudi demand to establish a civilian nuclear program, which raises serious concerns for Israel and the United States, as well as hope for confidence-building measures that would push a major agreement, such as inaugurating a direct flight line between Israel and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia during the Hajj period for Israeli Muslims performing the pilgrimage, which may not be realized this year. He pointed out that the Saudi demands make it difficult to negotiate an agreement with Israel."

According to the Hebrew newspaper "Haaretz," the Israeli official confirmed "that US President Joe Biden is seeking to achieve an Israeli-Saudi agreement and present it as an achievement during his election campaign next year, but he will face a big problem if the price is a nuclear program in Saudi Arabia."
