A recent report revealed that U.S. President Donald Trump ignored some key facts when criticizing the tariffs imposed by Canada on U.S. dairy products. According to an analysis published by CTV News, Trump's statements about these tariffs do not reflect the full picture of the trade reality between the two countries.

Trump had described the Canadian tariffs on dairy as "unfair" and "excessive," referring to the fees imposed by Canada on imported dairy products from the United States. However, the report clarified that Canada relies on a "Supply Management" system in the dairy sector, which is designed to protect local farmers from market fluctuations and ensures price and production stability within the country.

The report pointed out that the United States itself provides generous financial support to U.S. dairy farmers, giving them a competitive advantage in international markets. Additionally, some U.S. dairy products, including cheese and powdered milk, have the potential to enter the Canadian market in limited quantities without high tariffs, under the free trade agreement between the two countries (USMCA).

The report added that Trump did not address the restrictions imposed by the United States on certain Canadian agricultural products, including softwood lumber and steel. It concluded that the U.S. discourse on the dairy issue does not reflect the complete balance in the trade relationship between Canada and the United States, as both sides benefit from different trade arrangements in multiple sectors.

This controversy comes amid ongoing trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa, with calls from both sides to reassess certain provisions of trade agreements in order to ease the disputes.
