The Australian Bureau of Meteorology said today, Sunday, that the record-breaking floods in the northwest of the country have isolated many towns as the bad weather that began days ago continues.
The town of Fitzroy Crossing, with a population of about 1300 people, was among the hardest hit areas, with supplies being airlifted due to roads flooded by the floodwaters.
The Bureau of Meteorology also said today, Sunday, that rainfall has eased as the former cyclone moved east to the Northern Territory, but warned of continued "major record-breaking floods" in the Kimberley region of Western Australia.
Emergency services in the state also warned residents in other small communities of rising water levels in the area that includes the resort town of Broome, about two thousand kilometers north of the state capital Perth.
Authorities said the floods are the worst in the state's history, while Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described them yesterday, Saturday, as "devastating" and pledged federal assistance.
Authorities also said yesterday, Saturday, that Australian Defence Force aircraft were used to assist towns affected by the floods.
