The Canadian Natural Resources Agency reported that an earthquake measuring 4.6 struck the province of Quebec on Sunday morning.
The earthquake, which had its epicenter in "Pierreville," occurred at 5:45 a.m. (local time), about 20 kilometers northwest of "Drummondville" and 40 kilometers south of "Trois-Rivières."
Marieke Adams, a seismologist at the Canadian Natural Resources Agency, said, "People felt the earthquake widely in the area, and we received reports reaching Ottawa and Quebec as well."
Although earthquakes of magnitude 4 are relatively rare in Eastern Canada, the Montreal area is located in the seismic zone of western Quebec.
An early earthquake detection system will be activated in Eastern Canada this fall, which has already been implemented in British Columbia (the western part of the country) to warn residents a few seconds before a potentially severe tremor occurs.
