Poland's Interior Minister announced on Tuesday that his country has begun constructing a state-of-the-art electronic fence on its land border with the Russian Kaliningrad region to monitor and counter any illegal activity.
The fence, which will be equipped with 24-hour surveillance cameras and motion detectors, will extend for 210 kilometers and is scheduled to be completed in the fall.
For his part, Mariusz Kaminski said in a press conference: "We will have full monitoring of the border with Russia," adding, "I am confident that this will be the best-secured EU border."
Last year, Poland built a border fence with Belarus to stop a large influx of illegal migrants.
Kaminski mentioned that Poland's eastern borders with Russia and Belarus, which are also external EU borders, will be "fully prepared to counter any kind of illegal activities related to any crises involving our eastern neighbors."
In February, Poland erected anti-tank barriers on roads leading to border crossings with Kaliningrad, and last year it set up a barbed wire barrier there.
