Local officials said on Sunday that Russia's shelling of areas in eastern Ukraine overnight killed at least one person after Moscow ended a ceasefire announced on the occasion of Christmas and pledged to continue fighting until victory over its neighbor.

President Vladimir Putin also ordered a 36-hour ceasefire along the contact line on Friday to celebrate Orthodox Christmas in Russia and Ukraine, which was on Saturday. Ukraine rejected the truce and the front line came under shelling.

The regional governor, Oleh Syniehubov, said on Telegram that a 50-year-old man was killed in the northeastern Kharkiv region as a result of Russian shelling. This news came minutes after midnight in Moscow.

Most Ukrainian Orthodox Christians traditionally celebrate Christmas on January 7th, as do Orthodox Christians in Russia. However, the Orthodox Church in Ukraine also permitted a celebration on December 25th this year. Nevertheless, many celebrated the holiday on Saturday and flocked to churches and cathedrals.

The Kremlin also said Moscow would proceed with what it calls a "special military operation" in Ukraine, which Kyiv and its Western allies describe as an unjustified aggression to seize territory.
