The former leader of the New Democratic Party, Thomas Mulcair, stated that Jagmeet Singh will not be able to remain in his position as the leader of the party if he fails to maintain the party's official status in the House of Commons in the upcoming federal elections.

In a television interview broadcast by "CTV News," Mulcair clarified that the New Democratic Party faces a real risk of losing its official status if it cannot win at least 12 seats, noting that the decline in public support places Singh in a precarious situation.

Mulcair added: “No party leader can continue if their parliamentary presence falls below the minimum, especially if the leader has campaigned based on previous alliances with the Liberal government without achieving clear electoral gains.”

Recent polls indicate that support for the New Democratic Party ranges between 8% and 10% nationally, placing it in a fluctuating position in many key ridings.

Singh had led an informal parliamentary coalition with the Liberal government headed by Mark Carney, by supporting the government's budgets and legislative initiatives in exchange for implementing progressive reforms that included dental and housing support programs.

Observers believe that the party’s results in the elections on April 28 will be crucial in determining Singh's political fate, as he may face internal pressures to resign if the party suffers significant losses.

In contrast, neither Singh nor his office has made any official comment on Mulcair's statements, but he has previously reiterated his commitment to leading the party, emphasizing that “the New Democratic Party offers a real vision for social change and economic justice in Canada.”
