Mark Carney will take office as Prime Minister of Canada on Friday following a ceremony in which he will take the oath of office before the Governor General, representing the Head of State King Charles III, Ottawa announced on Wednesday.

The ruling party in Canada elected Mark Carney as its new leader and the next Prime Minister on Sunday, thus replacing Justin Trudeau, at a time when the country faces historic tensions with the United States under Donald Trump.

Liberals' party president Sacha Mehra announced that this 59-year-old former banker and political newcomer won with 85.9% of the votes.
