Leaders of First Nations in Manitoba are calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to rescind the appointment of veteran broadcaster Charles Adler to the Senate. The Manitoba Leaders Association states that Adler's previous comments towards Indigenous peoples are "extremely offensive" and contribute to the entrenchment of stereotypes.
In 1999, while working on a radio program in Winnipeg, Adler referred to Indigenous leaders as "uncivilized fools" and "intellectually dead," among other names.
Grand Chief Cathy Merrick of Manitoba questioned how Adler, who was appointed to the Senate to represent Manitoba at Trudeau's recommendation on Saturday, could advocate for First Nations in a respectful manner given his past words.
Adler wrote on social media that being criticized is not new for him, and he expects the same during his time in the Senate.
National Chief Cindy Woodhouse of the Assembly of First Nations said it is painful when individuals like Adler are appointed to the Senate, and she hopes he will take the time to meet with communities and learn from them.
