The Prime Minister, Wab Kinew, met with the federal Conservative leader, Pierre Poilievre, in the Manitoba Legislative Assembly this afternoon, Thursday.
This was during Poilievre's presence in Winnipeg to speak at the RBC Convention Centre at the "Axe the Tax" march.
Poilievre said he spoke with Kinew about his "common-sense" plan for the country, adding that they share similar goals on certain topics.
Poilievre added: "He is focused on making energy affordable. So he said he wants to exempt Manitoba from the carbon tax, and I agree that I want to exempt everyone from the carbon tax."
He said they also talked about building more roads and working on creating more economic development.
The federal Conservative leader said he enjoyed spending time with Kinew.
"Obviously I am a Conservative, and obviously he is a New Democrat, but that doesn't mean we can't share our priorities and have good conversations together. So I think it was a good meeting."
Poilievre was also asked about the recent decision by the federal government and provincial governments to contribute $20 million to fund the search in a Winnipeg landfill for two missing Indigenous women. Their remains are believed to be in the landfill.
Poilievre said he supported the money for the search.
"I can't even imagine what these families are going through. We all agree that if we have a loved one missing, we will ask the government to do everything it can to find the remains."
He followed that with his plan to reform the justice system so that violent offenders do not end up back on the streets.
"We will keep the most dangerous people behind bars to protect our most vulnerable people from those terrible crimes."
Poilievre also plans to meet with provincial premiers in Manitoba during his trip to the province, adding that he is open to meeting with any regional leader, from any party, if they are interested in reasonable conversations.
