Liberal Party leader Mark Carney intensified his attack on Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre on Monday, accusing him of using “phantom numbers” in his recently unveiled campaign platform, questioning the credibility of the financial accounts he relies on.

In statements made to reporters in Vancouver, Carney said: “Poilievre's financial plan is unrealistic and relies on unfunded promises that will lead to a larger budget deficit and cuts to essential services,” adding that the Conservative leader “is selling illusions to voters that cannot be translated into viable policies.”

Carney particularly criticized Poilievre's reliance on inaccurate forecasts regarding economic growth and the costs of the proposed policies, stating: “He is basing his campaign on fictional numbers that are not supported by economic facts or reliable sources.”

The Conservative Party recently unveiled its full campaign platform, pledging to cut taxes, reduce the role of government, and stop what it describes as “liberal waste.” However, the Liberals argue that these promises will lead to a decline in public investments, especially in areas like health, housing, and social programs.

For his part, Poilievre responded to the criticisms by saying that the Liberals have “lost control of the economy” and that his party has “a clear plan to restore fiscal discipline and reduce the cost of living for Canadians.”

This verbal exchange comes at a crucial time in the election campaign, less than a week before the scheduled federal elections on April 28, amid fierce competition between the two main parties, according to opinion polls.
