The Iraqi National Security Council denied on Wednesday the claims that Iran is using Iraqi territory as a platform to respond to the Israeli attacks that occurred in October.
During its session held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa al-Sudani, the council emphasized Iraq's steadfast position in supporting the struggles of the Palestinian and Lebanese peoples, and condemned the crimes committed by the Israeli entity against them, as reported by the Iraqi News Agency.
The council confirmed that reports of Iraqi territory being used as a launch pad for attacks are nothing but “false pretexts,” considering that these claims aim to undermine Iraq's sovereignty and attempt to justify potential attacks against it.
In a move to strengthen Iraq's neutral position, the council pointed out that “Iraq's supreme interests necessitate keeping its lands and airspace away from any potential conflict,” affirming that Iraq will not allow its territory to be used as a platform for any military escalation.
These statements come at a sensitive time as tensions between Iran and Israel have increased.
The “Times of Israel” had reported on Sunday from anonymous sources that satellites had detected the transfer of ballistic missiles from Iran to Iraq, raising speculation about the possibility of these missiles being used against Israel in an imminent attack.
This escalation coincides with Iran's threat to respond strongly to an Israeli attack carried out on October 26, which in turn came as a response to an Iranian missile attack at the beginning of the same month.
