Iran condemned today, Thursday, the Canadian government's decision to list the Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization, considering it "irresponsible."
Canada announced on Wednesday the inclusion of the Revolutionary Guard on its blacklist, accusing Tehran of "supporting terrorism" and "showing ongoing disregard for human rights inside and outside Iran, as well as being ready to destabilize the international legal order."
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani stated in a statement that this is a "hostile action."
He added that "this irresponsible and provocative act is part of the wrong path that the Canadian government has followed for over a decade," explaining that Tehran reserves the right to respond with a "proportional" retaliation.
Based on this decision, Canada can freeze the assets of individuals associated with the organization and prosecute them in court, in addition to prohibiting all financial transactions.
This decision comes amid tensions between the two countries, which have not had diplomatic relations since 2012.
Thus, Canada follows the United States, which blacklisted the Revolutionary Guard in 2019, while European politicians are urging their countries to do the same.
Since the protests that erupted in Iran following the death of young Mahsa Amini in 2022, Ottawa has imposed a series of sanctions on Iranian organizations and officials.
Canada has barred ten thousand Iranian officials from entering its territory, including members of the Revolutionary Guard.
