The Brazilian airline VOEPASS said that a plane carrying 62 people crashed in a fire accident in a residential area in the city of Vinhais in São Paulo state on Friday, but it was not immediately clear how many people were injured or killed.
VOEPASS confirmed in a statement that a plane headed for São Paulo's Guarulhos International Airport crashed in Vinhais with 58 passengers and four crew members on board. The statement did not mention the cause of the accident.
During an event in southern Brazil, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva asked attendees to stand for a moment of silence while sharing the news. He stated that it appeared that all passengers and crew members on the plane had perished, without clarifying how this information was obtained.
Video footage obtained by the Associated Press from a bystander and verified shows at least two bodies scattered among the burning wreckage.
Firefighters, military police, and civil defense teams were dispatched to the crash site in Vinhais. Authorities closed off the entrance to the residential area where the plane fell, while journalists outside monitored official vehicles, including ambulances, entering and waiting for updates.
Brazilian television network Globo News aired aerial footage of an area engulfed in smoke rising from the burning plane. Additional footage broadcasted earlier by Globo News showed the plane spiraling vertically downward as it fell.
The Capela neighborhood where the plane crashed is located in a remote area away from the bustling city center, which is home to 77,000 residents.
The plane had departed from Cascavel in the state of Paraná.
