The resignation of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau from the leadership of the Liberal Party on Monday morning sparked a wave of notable reactions from international political and economic figures.
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump did not miss the opportunity to reiterate his previous statements about the idea of annexing Canada as a U.S. state, posting on the "Truth Social" platform, saying:
“Many Canadians love the idea of their country being the 51st state. The United States can no longer afford the trade deficit and the support that Canada needs to survive. Justin Trudeau knew this, and that's why he resigned.”
Trump added:
“If Canada merged with the United States, there would be no tariffs, taxes would drop significantly, and Canada would be completely safe from Russian and Chinese threats. Together, we would be a great nation!”
For his part, the owner of the “X” platform and CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, commented on the news, saying:
“2025 looks promising,” in response to a tweet from a user regarding Trump's victory and Trudeau's resignation.
