British Foreign Secretary David Lammy met with his Canadian counterpart Melanie Joly today, Monday, in their first meeting since Lammy took office, according to the British "PA Media" agency.

Lammy said, "May I thank you very much for being my first official visitor as Foreign Secretary here in the United Kingdom."

Lammy affirmed that the two countries share "the closest ties," stating that he and Joly know each other from his time as Shadow Foreign Secretary.

Canada's Foreign Minister congratulated Lammy and Prime Minister Keir Starmer on their electoral victory.

Joly said, "Now we have a lot to do together. We certainly need a strong relationship between Canada and the United Kingdom, a historic relationship that we can deepen."

She also emphasized the need for Britain and Canada to work together to support Ukraine, reach a peace agreement in the Middle East, and ease tensions in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.
