Toronto residents may need to use snow shovels before the long Family Day weekend with the city's first major snowfall of the month expected this week.
There is also a slight chance of snow flurries on Wednesday, but Thursday will be a different story as a larger system moves in that could impact travel in the afternoon and evening.
CityNews 680 meteorologist Jill Taylor says residents should prepare for heavy, wet snow beginning around 11 a.m. and ending around 7 p.m. She expects 5-7 cm for Toronto and the western GTA, with snowfall possibly reaching 15 cm in the northern and eastern areas.
Taylor says, “The snow will accumulate quickly. All the snow we didn’t get in January will seem like it all came in one day tomorrow.
In addition to the incoming snow, cold air will take center stage this week with feels-like temperatures in the negative tens early Wednesday before warming to 0 degrees Celsius in the afternoon.
Thursday will see a high of 1 degree Celsius with the arrival of snow, and the daytime temperature on Friday will hover around freezing.
The Family Day weekend will see a slight temperature increase after a colder Saturday (high of -4 degrees Celsius), with daytime highs above 0 degrees Celsius on Sunday, rising to 3 degrees Celsius with sunny skies on the special Monday.
Taylor says, “We may see some snow flurries over the weekend, at least on Saturday and Sunday.” She adds, “And temperatures are expected to rise on Monday.”
