German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated on Tuesday that former U.S. President Donald Trump's proposal to deport Palestinians from Gaza to Egypt and Jordan is "unacceptable."
Scholz: The solution lies in a Palestinian state
At an election rally in Berlin, Scholz emphasized his firm rejection of any plans to forcibly resettle Palestinians outside their territories, considering that the Palestinian Authority should take responsibility for Gaza in any future solution. He added:
“Any plans to resettle or expel the residents of Gaza to Egypt or Jordan are completely unacceptable.”
The German Chancellor reaffirmed his support for the two-state solution, believing that achieving peace requires empowering Palestinians to govern themselves, warning against "wasting the fragile hope for peace" that emerged after the recent ceasefire agreement.
Trump proposes “the option of expulsion” and Palestinians reject it
For his part, former U.S. President Donald Trump suggested transferring the residents of Gaza to neighboring countries, considering that Jordan and Egypt could accommodate Palestinians in "alternative" lands.
Right-wing Israeli welcome and Arab rejection
Trump's proposal received support from extremist Israeli right-wing leaders, with Itamar Ben Gvir, the resigned Israeli National Security Minister, stating that Trump's remarks grant “international legitimacy” to this project. Meanwhile, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said:
“Helping Palestinians find new places to start a new life is a great idea; we need to think outside the box instead of a two-state solution.”
However, on the other side, the Egyptian and Jordanian positions were definitive in rejecting this proposal.
• Egypt firmly rejected the idea of establishing refugee camps for Palestinians in Sinai.
• Jordan, through its Foreign Minister, emphasized that the kingdom will not accept any attempt to resettle Palestinians or change the demographic makeup of Jordan.
Palestinians reject forced displacement
From within the Gaza Strip, residents confirmed their absolute rejection of any plan to displace them, emphasizing that they are rooted in their land and will not accept any attempt to remove them from it.
Summary
• Scholz rejects Trump’s proposal and affirms that the solution is a Palestinian state.
• Trump views displacement as a "potential solution" and proposes resettling Palestinians in neighboring countries.
• Right-wing Israel welcomes it, while Egypt and Jordan strongly reject it.
• Palestinians reject forced displacement and affirm their attachment to their land.
