American businessman Elon Musk acknowledged that he "crossed the line" in his recent public dispute with U.S. President Donald Trump, after both parties exchanged a series of criticisms and attacks on platform X (formerly Twitter) over the past few days.
Musk said in a post published on his official account on Tuesday evening:
"I regret some of my posts about President Donald Trump last week; I crossed the line."
This acknowledgment represents a significant retreat from Musk, after sparking controversy with previous tweets in which he implied that Trump's name might be linked to "the Jeffrey Epstein files," and criticized him for supporting the U.S. spending bill, describing it as "filled with waste" that burdens the American economy.
Unprecedented dispute between two powerful figures
Trump had strongly responded to Musk's remarks, accusing him of "losing control of himself," threatening to reconsider the federal contracts benefiting his companies, primarily "Tesla" and "SpaceX." Trump stated at one of his campaign events:
"I have dealt with Musk with utmost respect, but he suddenly turned… and we will not allow him to blackmail us."
The dispute surprised many followers, particularly as the relationship between the two men has experienced periods of closeness in the past, as Musk had previously served on the advisory councils for President Trump's first term, before later resigning due to disagreements over environmental and technological issues.
Signs of de-escalation
In response to Musk's apology, sources close to Trump’s campaign said the president "welcomes the apology," while Trump reposted Musk's message with a heart emoji, an indication that was implicitly seen as signs of de-escalation.
Analysts believe that the tension between the two parties reflects the sensitivity of the current political phase in the United States, as Trump runs his campaign to return to the White House, while Musk maintains extensive digital and economic influence affecting public opinion through his platform and companies.
Personal and political backgrounds
Elon Musk, known for his sharp positions and provocative statements, has previously supported some of Trump's policies, but he has engaged in sharp disputes with him over immigration, artificial intelligence, and digital freedoms. He was one of the most prominent opponents of the internet censorship policies during Trump's first term, and has called for more "technological independence" away from the directions of both parties.
As for Trump, he views Musk as a powerful figure who may influence the attitudes of middle-class and tech voters, but at the same time has warned multiple times against "the domination of large corporations over public discourse."
Summary of the scene
The dispute between Musk and Trump turned into a sharp public debate, which quickly calmed down with Musk's acknowledgment of crossing the line.
This incident reminds us of the extent to which influential figures impact the political and digital sphere in the United States.
Analysts see the apology as a smart move by Musk, especially with the presidential elections approaching.
