Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that the federal government is granting Ontario funding worth $3.1 billion over the next three years to help address the healthcare crisis in the province.
Trudeau also announced the official signing of the agreement in a press conference in King City.
Ontario is the fifth province to sign its share of the healthcare agreement, which is valued at $200 billion and was presented by Trudeau to the provinces last year.
According to this agreement, the Ford government committed to providing new primary care teams, as well as supporting access to family doctors through this funding.
The federal government also stated in a press release regarding this matter that this funding will support access to family doctors, eliminate long wait times, employ more healthcare workers, and ensure comprehensive healthcare for Canadians, including mental health.
Ontario is expected to add many family doctors, new nurses, and personal support workers as part of the agreement’s provisions.
The federal government announced that part of the new funding will be allocated to patients with mental illnesses and improving mental health for all Ontario residents, as well as expanding psychotherapy programs.
It indicated that its health data systems will be updated, and plans and arrangements will be set for this purpose.
Ontario had previously announced that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to sign a new agreement with Ontario Premier Doug Ford regarding healthcare between the province in the Toronto area and the federal government.
This statement came nearly a year after the two governments reached a 10-year agreement to cover healthcare costs in Ontario.
The federal government also stated that the agreement includes a cost of $8.4 billion, in addition to a one-time additional amount of $776 million to meet urgent needs in children's hospitals and emergency rooms. The details of the deal had not been disclosed at that time, but the announcement of funding was welcomed by hospital workers.
It was announced that Trudeau will sign the agreement with Ford in Ontario in King City.
He indicated that Federal Health Minister Mark Holland and Ontario Health Minister Sylvia Jones will join them.
