A man died after falling into a crevasse while leading a ski group in the backcountry of the Canadian Rockies.

Friends identified the man as Rob Cobulillo, a husband, father, and owner of Vetta Mountain Guides based in Seattle, Washington.

His close friend and professional colleague, Brian Lazar, stated that Cobulillo was leading a trip when the incident occurred, and he had all the proper safety protocols in place at the time.

On April 18, Parks Canada officials said they received an emergency call from Icefall Lodge, located in a remote area near the Lyell Icefield, about a person who had fallen into a crevasse near Christian Peak in Banff National Park.

Rescue personnel from Alpine Helicopters responded to the site near the Alberta-BC border to find that the skier had been retrieved and group members were providing first aid.

Officials clarified that Cobulillo remained in the crevasse for approximately an hour.

James Eestham from Parks Canada said, "Visitor safety specialists continued first aid and transported the seriously injured skier to Lake Louise, where they were transferred by STARS air ambulance."

STARS confirmed they then transported the patient with injuries "sustained from falling in a mountainous area" to Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary.

Stewart Breducks, public education officer with Alberta Health Services, stated that EMS also has ground crews responding to the helicopter landing site at Lake Louise, confirming that this was a significant collaborative response among many agencies.

He added, "Timing was critical to allow these things to align. Initially, the ability to find him and retrieve him in a very short time was extremely crucial. The cold environment in which this occurred was a positive factor in everything in this situation."

"The ability to coordinate between two helicopters to initiate the rescue operation and ground units to provide that care was very important."

Despite rescue efforts, Lazar said Cobulillo suffered from severe hypothermia, remained unresponsive in the hospital, and passed away shortly afterward.

A GoFundMe page set up on behalf of the family has raised over $42,000 of its $500,000 goal.

The page's author, Michelle Lazar, wrote, "It's an unimaginable loss for Rebecca, Dominic, and Luca, and countless friends around the world. While Rebecca and the boys are strong, the support from their friends everywhere helps them navigate their new world without Rob."
