Palestinian health officials said Israeli airstrikes in central Gaza killed at least 11 people on Monday night, including a woman and three children.
An airstrike on a home in the Al-Bureij refugee camp late Sunday night resulted in the deaths of four people, including three children. The second strike, which occurred early Monday, killed seven people, including a woman, in the Al-Nuseirat refugee camp.
Earlier on Monday, the Israeli army said a man's body, presumed to be a hostage, was found in a community near the Gaza border that was attacked by Hamas militants on October 7.
U.S. President Joe Biden said on Friday that Israel offered Hamas a ceasefire in three phases and the release of hostages, announcing that it was time to end the fighting in Gaza and that Hamas "is no longer capable" of launching another large-scale attack on Israel.
Israel is expanding its assault on the city of Rafah in southern Gaza, which was once the main hub for humanitarian operations. The Israeli invasion has largely cut off the flow of food, medicine, and other supplies to Palestinians facing widespread hunger. Israel is facing increasing international criticism over the heavy civilian toll and widespread destruction caused by its nearly eight-month-long war with Hamas.
Israeli bombardment and ground operations in the besieged territory have resulted in the deaths of more than 36,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's health ministry, which does not distinguish between fighters and civilians.
Israel launched its war on Gaza following Hamas's attack on October 7, in which militants stormed southern Israel, killing around 1,200 people—most of them civilians—and kidnapping about 250. Israel claims that around 100 hostages are still being held in Gaza, along with the bodies of around 30 others.
Here are the key events:
Israeli airstrikes kill 11 people in Gaza
Deir al-Balah (Gaza Strip) – Officials in the Palestinian health sector said Israeli airstrikes killed 11 people on Monday night, including a woman and three children, in central Gaza.
An airstrike on a home in the Al-Bureij refugee camp late Sunday night resulted in the deaths of four people, including three children. The second strike, which occurred early Monday, killed seven people, including a woman, in the Al-Nuseirat refugee camp.
Both camps date back to the 1948 war following Israel's creation, when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians fled or were expelled from areas that became part of the new state, and refugees and their descendants make up the majority of Gaza’s population.
An Associated Press reporter counted the bodies as they arrived at the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah in central Gaza on Monday and confirmed the details with hospital records.
Israel says it is trying to avoid harming civilians, blaming Hamas for their deaths because the militant group operates its fighters, tunnels, and rocket launchers in densely populated residential areas. The military rarely comments on individual strikes that often kill women and children.
Iranian leader: Israel is 'collapsing'
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Monday that Israel is collapsing due to its war against Hamas in Gaza.
During a ceremony commemorating the 35th anniversary of the birth of the late Iranian leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Khamenei stated, "Today, the Zionist regime is gradually melting before the eyes of the world's people." State television broadcast his speech live.
In a speech lasting about 55 minutes, the leader said that Israel's response to the October 7 Hamas attack that triggered the war has put it in a "dead end."
Khamenei also stated that the war has derailed U.S.-backed Israeli efforts to reach a settlement with its regional neighbors, which he described as part of an Israeli plot to control the region.
Israeli military announces interception of missile
The Israeli army reported that it intercepted a ground-to-ground missile launched towards southern Israel from the Red Sea.
There were no reports of injuries or damage in the incident on Monday, which set off sirens in the city of Eilat in southern Israel.
The army did not specify the source of the missile, but it is likely that it was fired by Houthi rebels in Yemen, who have claimed responsibility for several drone and missile attacks on Israel in recent months. Almost all projectiles have been intercepted.
The Iran-backed Houthis have repeatedly targeted international shipping in the Red Sea, portraying their actions as a blockade on Israel in support of the Palestinians. However, most of the ships targeted have no known connections to Israel.
Israel finds body of man believed to be a hostage
The Israeli army announced that the body of a presumed hostage was found in a community near the Gaza border that was attacked by Hamas militants on October 7.
Dolev Yehud (35 years old) is believed to have been among dozens of hostages held in Gaza until Monday when the army announced the discovery of his body and said he was killed in the initial attack.
His remains were found in Kibbutz Nir Oz, where he lived and worked as a paramedic. Israeli media reported that Dolev's wife, Sigal, who was nine months pregnant on October 7, gave birth to their fourth child nine days after the attack.
Medical workers and scientists, including archaeologists, have spent months trying to identify the remains found in communities that were attacked by Palestinian militants in the widespread assault that ignited the war in Gaza.
The surprise attack on Israel resulted in the deaths of around 1,200 people, most of them civilians. The militants kidnapped around 250 people, more than 100 of whom were released during a ceasefire last year.
The Israeli government says that militants in Gaza are still holding around 85 hostages and the remains of 39 others.
Israel launched a wide-scale attack in response to the assault, which has led to the deaths of over 36,000 Palestinians, according to local health officials who do not distinguish between civilians and fighters in their tally.
