The negotiations between Canada Post and the union representing its workers remain stalled, with ongoing disagreements over wages and working conditions.
Key updates:
• Union proposal:
• A 19% wage increase over four years, after reducing their previous demand from 24%.
• Provision for a cost of living allowance.
• Addition of 10 medical days to the 7 personal days already in the current agreement.
• Raising short-term disability compensation to 80% of wages.
• Improving rights for temporary workers and ensuring a minimum of weekly working hours for part-time workers (20 hours).
• Ensuring job routes in rural areas remain at 8 hours a day.
• Canada Post's response:
• An offer of an 11.5% increase over four years.
• It states that the union's demands would cost the company more than $3 billion over four years, making them "unfeasible" amid ongoing financial losses for six years.
Impact of the strike (week four):
• 55,000 workers stopped working.
• Charitable donations decreased by 50%.
• Delays in the issuance of passports sent by mail.
• Millions of shipments and mail parcels halted.
As the deadlock in negotiations continues, pressure is rising on both sides to reach an agreement, especially with increasing economic damage and the impact of the strike on many sectors.
