CNN reported from a source familiar with the ceasefire negotiations in Gaza that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "ruined everything" with the speech he delivered on Monday evening.
The source mentioned that after receiving news of the killing of six hostages in Gaza, the officials involved in mediating the ceasefire talks made phone calls to discuss ways to move forward with the ceasefire agreement and prisoner exchange.
The source added: "But Netanyahu gave a speech on Monday evening followed by a press conference, where he said that Israel will never leave the Philadelphia Corridor... He destroyed everything in one speech."
CNN noted that there is increasing frustration over Netanyahu's wait for an agreement with Hamas to return 101 hostages still in Gaza. The network reported that "it is not surprising that Hamas, led by Yahya Sinwar, holds the decisive word in these negotiations."
The network added that "Yahya Sinwar, the head of Hamas, exploits every weakness in Netanyahu that he can manipulate, the most obvious of which is his vulnerability to public opinion... Netanyahu is not only facing his traditional enemies from the liberal left in his country, but he is in a decisive confrontation with Yahya Sinwar, who has shown a willingness to enter into tough positions to achieve his goals."
CNN continued that "the situation for Israel looks bleak; the chances for the safe release of the hostages are fading, which also affects Netanyahu's political future."
It pointed out that "Netanyahu's political skills have kept him in office for a long time... but the question now is how long he can remain in power?".
In response, Hamas reacted to Netanyahu's statements, describing them as "the speech of a desperate person seeking an illusory victory that he could not achieve in front of his audience."
US President Joe Biden also made sharp and unusual comments against Netanyahu on Monday, confirming that ceasefire negotiations in Gaza and the prisoner swap deal are still ongoing, but not with Netanyahu.
