The American news site "Axios" mentioned that Senate Democrats will not meet on Monday to discuss their support for President Joe Biden to continue his efforts to be re-elected, despite the efforts made by Democratic Senator Mark Warner to organize such a meeting.
Warner's meeting was seen as a potentially pivotal moment for Senate Democrats, who have largely remained silent about Biden's future amid calls for him to step down, according to the Saudi channel "Al-Sharq."
A source close to Warner told "Axios" that Senator Mark Warner, the Democrat from Virginia, was in contact last week with Democratic senators regarding the meeting to discuss Biden's path forward, but this meeting was never actually scheduled.
The source added that the leaked details of the proposed meeting made it impossible to have a private conversation, while Senate Democrats as a whole will meet on Tuesday in a regularly scheduled party meeting, noting that Democratic senators are having ongoing discussions about whether Biden should remain the party's nominee amid concerns about his advancing age and mental capacity.
While some lawmakers, like Senator Bernie Sanders, have stood by the president, many Democratic senators have remained silent.
Senators will return to Washington on Monday after a two-week absence, and this will be the first time they gather together since Biden's debate with former President Donald Trump.
A group of senior House Democrats said on Sunday that Biden should withdraw from the race.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer publicly declared his support for Biden, but has been telling his political allies that holding an early debate in July would give the party flexibility to move forward, including looking for a new candidate.
