Canadian Prime Ministers have agreed to Quebec's request to stand together and urge the federal government to distribute asylum seekers more evenly across the country.
However, Quebec Premier François Legault did not mention last Tuesday the provinces that accepted to take in more potential refugees.
He told reporters at a meeting in Halifax with Canada's Prime Ministers that Quebec is no longer able to support the large number of asylum seekers who have arrived in recent years.
Legault emphasized that other provinces have shown "openness" to receiving more, but he did not specify them.
In this context, both Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and British Columbia Premier David Eby stated during a press conference last Tuesday that they are already facing similar pressures from immigration, and they did not commit to taking in more people.
Legault added that he hopes to transfer asylum seekers from Quebec to other provinces in the coming months and warned that the return of former U.S. President Donald Trump to the White House could lead to a new influx of potential refugees.
Statistics Canada has clarified that there were 597,000 temporary residents in Quebec in the second quarter of 2024, including 190,000 asylum seekers.
