The armies of the Philippines, Canada, the United States, and Australia announced that they have begun their first joint military exercises today, Wednesday, in the South China Sea to enhance cooperation among their forces.

China claims sovereignty over most of the South China Sea, which is a maritime trade route valued at three trillion dollars annually, and also asserts claims over Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Vietnam in the region.

In 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague stated that China's claims have no legal basis, a ruling that Beijing rejected.

The Chinese embassy in Manila has not yet responded to a request for comment on the joint exercises among the four nations.
