Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued a detailed statement regarding the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon, emphasizing the importance of this step to achieve security and stability in the region. He noted that the cessation of hostilities will contribute to:
1. Easing tensions along the Israeli-Lebanese border.
2. Restoring Lebanon's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and stability.
3. Securing Israel from the threat of Hezbollah and terrorist groups.
4. Safely returning displaced persons to their homes on both sides of the blue line.
He also expressed Canada's gratitude to the United States and France for their role in mediation, and reaffirmed his country's commitment to protecting Israel's right to live in peace and security. He strongly condemned the destabilizing actions carried out by Iran through its proxies in the Middle East.
Additionally, Trudeau called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the disarmament of Hamas, and the unconditional release of all hostages, along with a significant and sustained increase in the flow of humanitarian aid. He stressed the importance of protecting civilians and the parties' commitment to international law.
The statement reaffirmed Canada's commitment to a two-state solution as a permanent path to achieve peace between Israelis and Palestinians, and expressed condolences to the families of civilian victims in Israel, Gaza, and Lebanon.
