Canada announced that it will coordinate with its allies to impose sanctions on two prominent ministers from the far-right current in the Israeli government, namely Itamar Ben Gvir, the Minister of National Security, and Bezalel Smotrich, the Minister of Finance. This comes in light of their statements and incitement to violence against Palestinians in the West Bank.
In a statement released by the Canadian government, National Defence Minister Anita Anand said that the sanctions include banning the ministers from entering Canada and freezing potential assets. She emphasized that this step is not targeting Israel as a state, but rather individuals who "fuel the conflict and undermine opportunities for peace."
Anand stated:
“Canada condemns incitement to violence and reaffirms its continued support for international law and human rights.”
Background of the move and motivations
Canada joins the efforts of the European Union and several Western countries to impose sanctions against Israeli officials in light of the escalation of settler operations and field provocations against Palestinians.
The sanctions come amid rising tensions in relations with Israel due to the ongoing war on Gaza and the expansion of settlements in the West Bank, which has provoked global diplomatic anger.
This stance aims to affirm Canada's support for a two-state solution and indicate that aggressive statements and actions by officials from the Israeli government can have clear international consequences.
Possible reactions and expected Israeli response
This Canadian action is expected to provoke a diplomatic reaction from Israel, which may be interpreted in Israel as interference in internal affairs. The government may use various channels to exert counter-pressure or by highlighting the file of Western boycotts regarding security and supply issues affecting relations.
