Jesse Marsch, the coach of the Canadian national team, expressed his satisfaction with the team's performance in their first appearance at the Copa America 2024.
The Canadian team finished its journey in the tournament currently held in the United States in fourth place, after losing 3 / 4 on penalties to Uruguay last night (Saturday local time, early Sunday morning GMT) in the bronze medal playoff.
Canada remained ahead 2 / 1 before Uruguay's veteran star Luis Suarez equalized in the second minute of stoppage time, leading both teams to penalties, which ultimately favored the sky-blue team.
Marsch, who took over the Canadian team just a few weeks before the start of Copa America, stated that his players delivered a "statement" showing how much they have progressed from where it was believed they would be at this time.
Marsch said at the press conference following the match against Uruguay, "The players feel disappointed about how we lost the game. But I was very positive with them."
The American coach added, "We have been together for about 6 weeks, played against one of the best teams in the world, and imposed our control over the match. We were much better for most of the game, which is very good."
Marsch pointed out that his team lost possession of the ball a lot in the final minutes, which allowed Uruguay to come back into the match.
Marsch confirmed, "We should have been able to finish that game in our favor. But this intelligence in dealing with such situations is something we need to develop, and we will do that."
The Canadian team is preparing to participate in the 2026 World Cup, which it is co-hosting with Mexico and the United States.
It is worth noting that the Canadian team qualified for the knockout stages of Copa America after finishing second in Group A, which included Argentina, Peru, and Chile, before defeating Venezuela on penalties in the quarter-finals, and then losing 0 / 2 to the companions of the Argentine magician Lionel Messi in the semifinals.
