American network "CNN" yesterday, Monday, June 26, 2023, unveiled an audio recording of a meeting held by former U.S. President Donald Trump in 2021, in which he admitted that he retained a classified Department of Defense (Pentagon) document regarding a potential attack on Iran.
The American network broadcast the recording on the program "Anderson Cooper 360," which included new details from the conversation that is considered an important part of the evidence in the indictment against Trump for mishandling classified information, including the moment when Trump appears to refer to keeping a classified document about a potential plan to attack Iran.
Trump said in the recording, "These are the papers," while discussing attack plans.
Also in the two-minute audio recording, Trump and his aides joked about Hillary Clinton's emails after the former president said the document was "classified information," where someone said to Trump, "Hillary would have printed that," and Donald Trump replied, "No, she would have sent it to Anthony Weiner," referring to the former Democratic congressman, which caused laughter.
The FBI had investigated Clinton about her handling of classified information in the days leading up to the 2016 election that she lost to Trump.
It is worth mentioning that Trump's statements during the audio recording could undermine the claims he made in an interview with Fox News last week, in which he said he did not have any classified documents.
Also, the former U.S. president had said earlier this month that he is not guilty of 37 charges related to the alleged mishandling of classified documents.
The audio recording was from an interview Trump conducted in July 2021 at his Bedminster resort for the people working on the memoirs of Mark Meadows, former White House Chief of Staff during Trump's era, and the indictment stated that those present were shown classified information regarding the attack plan on Iran.
In response, Trump campaign spokesman Stephen Cheung said in a statement that "the audio recording once again proves that President Trump never made any mistake at all."
