Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson called today, Friday, for calm and "reflection" following a wave of anger and condemnation caused by an Iraqi national residing in Sweden burning a copy of the Quran outside a mosque in Stockholm.
He said in a press conference that "it is difficult to determine what the consequences of this act will be" and called "to reflect on the matter," referring to the Muslim community in Sweden, which expressed strong displeasure, especially since the burning of the Quran coincided with the start of Eid al-Adha in the Arab world last Wednesday.
The individual named Das Sulwan Momika, 37 years old, had obtained a permit to carry out the burning in front of the largest mosque in the Swedish capital as a form of protest.
While the authorities issued a permit to Momika to undertake the step in accordance with the protection of freedom of expression in Sweden, they later announced the opening of an investigation into allegations of the charge of "incitement" against a religious group, noting that he burned the Quran very close to the mosque.
In the same context, the Prime Minister added that "just because some things are legal, does not necessarily mean they are appropriate."
