Winnipeg police charged parents with involuntary manslaughter after their one-year-old daughter died from fentanyl poisoning in March 2023.
The police said in a press release on Monday that a 38-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman were arrested at their home on Mackenzie Street on Friday.
The police added that Winnipeg police's child abuse unit began investigating the death on March 23, after a man called 911 and told police that his daughter was unresponsive in their home.
Paramedics in Winnipeg responded and performed CPR on the child before transferring her to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Both parents were arrested on charges of criminal negligence causing death, and the man was also charged with possession of a controlled substance after officers found a small amount of fentanyl with him at the time of arrest. They were later released.
The police said in the press release that autopsy and toxicology reports found that the girl died due to "high levels of fentanyl poisoning."
During the investigation, the parents provided few details about the child's death, although the police claim they learned that their daughter was exposed to fentanyl before the man called 911.
The parents are now in custody, and the police are holding a press conference about the investigation on Monday morning.
