More than 4,000 small stores across Ontario have obtained a permit to sell alcoholic beverages, with the new federal rules coming into effect next week.
The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario reported that it has approved 4,146 licenses in this regard.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford had pledged during the 2018 election campaign to allow the sale of alcohol in small stores.
He also announced last December that all shops and grocery stores would be allowed to sell beer, wine, apple cider, and ready-to-drink cocktails by 2026.
Ford also announced last May plans to expedite that decision and made a deal with The Beer Store for $225 million.
The province agreed to a 10-year agreement with the company.
