A man from Quebec was sentenced to 20 months in prison after admitting to threatening Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Prime Minister François Legault.

Public prosecutor Geneviève Crêpeau confirmed to Noovo Info that the judge issued the sentence on Friday at the Sherbrooke courthouse.

German Limay, a resident of Hampden in the Eastern Townships, admitted in January to making threats against the politicians in videos posted between July and September 2023, in addition to making similar threats against any police officer who came onto his property and against an employee of the workplace health and safety board in Quebec.

The crown sought a 20-month prison sentence, while the defense requested a sentence of two years of community service.

Crêpeau, who pointed to several aggravating factors in proposing this sentence, including the nature and frequency of the videos, said: "We have serious comments and hatred encouraging the population to rebel against the government... There are over 200 videos, over two months." There were hateful comments, as well as the tone used by the accused: "There are many victims."

Previous lack of a criminal record was cited as a mitigating factor during the sentencing hearing.
