The Toronto Police evacuated a pro-Palestinian camp at York University’s campus just one day after it was set up.

Protesters began erecting tents at Harry W. Arthurs Common on the Keele campus of York University in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

But on Thursday morning, York University issued attendees a notice of trespass for what it described as their "unauthorized use of campus grounds."

Toronto Police said officers then attended the area at the university's request and ordered the protesters to leave the land.

It added, "Around 40 protesters left the camp as directed. One person returned and was arrested under the trespass to property act,” according to a statement from the police.

The camp at York University was formed more than a month after a similar camp was established at the downtown University of Toronto campus on May 2.

In that case, the University of Toronto initially allowed protesters to stay on campus and did not issue a notice of trespass until three weeks later on May 24.

Since then, the university has sought a court order allowing police to remove protesters who refuse to leave.

However, police said they had no plans to evict the camp until legal proceedings were complete.

Last week, Vice President Rob Johnson pointed to the fact that the university initially allowed protesters to stay on campus to explain the delay in taking action.

Meanwhile, York University said in a statement issued on Friday that it had been clear for weeks now "that camps and the actual occupation of community spaces are not permitted under its policies."

The university added that the common area where the camp was established "is designated for use as a study, work, and recreation space."

"Currently, the individuals involved in the camp have left peacefully, and York's community safety team has cleared the site of equipment so it can be returned to its intended use as soon as possible." The statement noted that the university had requested the presence of Toronto Police Service to ensure the safety of all involved.

York University added in its statement that it was committed to meeting with community representatives "in the coming week."

It also said it would issue a letter later today in response to "the concerns that prompted the camps, including the deep suffering of Palestinians in Gaza."
