Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a significant cabinet reshuffle today, Friday, adding eight Liberal MPs to his government and redistributing portfolios among four current ministers.
This reshuffle comes after a turbulent week for the Liberal federal government, and is seen as a move to stabilize, just a month before the elected U.S. President Donald Trump officially takes office.
The reshuffle ceremony took place in the Rideau Hall in the capital Ottawa, presided over by Governor General Mary Simon, with Trudeau making his first public appearance after increasing calls for his resignation.
Key new appointments:
1. Nathaniel Erskine-Smith: Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities.
2. David McGuinty: Minister of Public Safety.
3. Rachel Bendayan: Minister of Official Languages and Deputy Minister of Public Safety.
4. Elizabeth Vreher: Minister of National Revenue.
5. Terry Duguid: Minister of Economic Development for the Prairie Regions.
6. Darren Fisher: Minister of Veterans Affairs and Deputy Minister of Defence.
7. Joan Thompson: Minister for Seniors.
8. Ruby Sahota: Minister of the Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario.
Key modifications to current ministers:
• Anita Anand: Minister of Transportation and Internal Trade.
• Gary Anandasangaree: retains the Indigenous Relations portfolio and adds Northern Affairs.
• Steven MacKinnon: retains the Labour portfolio with the addition of Employment and Workforce Development.
• Ginette Petitpas Taylor: new President of the Treasury Board.
Comments and Observations:
This move comes amid increasing calls within the Liberal party for a change in Trudeau's leadership, although those close to the Prime Minister indicated that this reshuffle does not necessarily mean he is prepared to announce his resignation soon.
