The Islamic Food Bank in Canada provides extensive volunteer services to Muslims in Canada during the holy month of Ramadan to Iftar thousands of fasting people through various donations collected during the holy month. The bank has suffered from a lack of financial resources, so it called on Muslims and workers in charitable work to donate in order to continue the work as it was.

Azim Dahiya, the volunteer CEO of the Islamic Food Bank in Toronto, said yesterday, Sunday, that the charity organization is struggling to meet the demand for its food suitable for the Islamic culture, and he said demand has increased significantly this year compared to last year due to inflation, rising food costs, and the influx of new arrivals.

While food banks across the Greater Toronto Area are also struggling with need, he said the Islamic Food Bank faces a unique challenge because it tries to help people during Ramadan when they break their fast.

Dahiya said there is a shortage of halal food across Canada.

He added, in recent years, demand has doubled or tripled due to rising inflation as well as refugees coming here from Palestine, Afghanistan, Syria, Myanmar, Somalia, Sudan, and from all over the world. We have refugees coming here, and people do not realize that they are coming daily, and our role is to help them in the short term and stabilize them by providing food, clothing, and such things.

Last year, the Food Bank helped between 30 to 50 families monthly, or about 200 to 300 people, and this year, the organization helps between 100 and 250 families, or about 500 to 700 people monthly.

The Islamic Food Bank, which has nine locations across Canada, witnesses the largest number of people in Toronto.

Dahiya said many families fast all day during Ramadan, and with no food and water, it becomes emotionally and physically exhausting, and they do not know where their next meal will be.

He confirmed that the Food Bank helps as much as it can in cooking meals in a house used by the Islamic Centre in its services, offering halal and vegetarian meals.

He confirmed that Food Bank volunteers have prepared distribution packages at the Food Bank site in North York to distribute next week, and the parcels are filled with non-perishable food items for needy families and include enough for a month.
