CTV News confirmed that former RCMP intelligence officer Cameron Ortis – who was sentenced to 14 years in prison after leaking national secrets – has been released on bail pending appeal.

Ortis is expected to be released once the conditions are determined, and more details are expected to be obtained on Monday.

Ortis was the director-general of the RCMP National Intelligence Coordination Centre before his arrest in September 2019.

Last November, he was convicted by a jury on six charges, including three offenses related to violating the Security of Information Act, and one attempt to do so, marking the first time charges under the Official Secrets Act were brought to trial.

Judge Robert Maranger said at Ortis's sentencing in February that the task was a "heavy burden," and he expects Ortis's decision to be appealed to higher courts based on "what evidence can be presented and what cannot be presented in court." The trial is for reasons related to national security.

Both the crown and the defense filed appeals against Ortis's sentence, and his appeal request was heard on March 8.

He had been spending his time at Joyceville Institution, a medium-security prison near Kingston, Ontario.
